Tripple-P TXU-1256 D-Star Repeater

On request of Stefan, ON4SH, I’ve used his TXU-1256-Repeater to build a D-Star Repeater.
This in combination with the Satoschi Node Adapter V6 and the DVAR software on windows xp.

Some thoughs on the above setup: It should run on Linux! However. Nobody has released software that is compatible with the mainstream trustserver that can be used on Linux. We are still awaiting the release of the very promising dstar repeater software of G4ULF which will also make it possible to use it as a real ICOM D-Star Digital Repeater.

DVAR is more of a full duplex hotspot with repeater functionality, however it does have some nice features that even the ICOM D-Star Digital Repeater does not have. The one I like the most is the fact that the system tells you via the message field to where it is currently connected, and it does so after each TX ! This might be cool on Icom repeaters!

The TXU was modified following the “how to modify your Tripple-P TXU-1256 for D-Star” document by PE1RPO, describing, in dutch, with pictures, how to modify your TXU repeater for D-Star use. The most important one is the PTT mod. Since the TXU is designed to stay in TX 24/7, the PLL lock is very slow and might cause the CPU to freak out. With the PTT mod, you can leave the CPU (and PLL) in TX 24/7, but you switch the driver from the external port (read: with the satoschi board), meaning that the repeater will only be on air when you want it to be, while not having to lock the PLL all the time. (Your repeater will run have its TX on the same frequency for all of its mature life, so this is a good solution). Thx to Tom ON4TOP for the hint.

Furthermore, I used the Trippe-P TXU-1256 manual to find our what pins are what, and made a cable for this to inferface with the satoschi board. After that it wasn’t more then configuring the software and the repeater worked!
Ofcourse you need to setup portforwarding to port 20001 in your NAT-Router/firewall if you are not directly connected to a public IP (NAT) or if you have a firewall ;)
Furthermore you need to register your repeater callsign with an ICOM D-Star Digital Repeater that can vouch for your license. Otherwise you will not be able to connect to another system over the internet, and this is the meaning of DVAR after all.

If you can read dutch, this is a very good forum about using the Trippe-P TXU-1256 for ham-radio purposes.

    [...] Triple-P voor ON0AT D-Star-repeater in Schoten Op vraag van Stefan, ON4SH, heeft ON4SAX een TXU-1256-Repeater omgebouwd naar een D-Star repeater. Er is gekozen voor een combinatie met de Node Adapter Satoschi V6 en de DVAR software op Windows XP.  (Nog) Niemand heeft de software die compatibel is met de Dplus trustserver die kan worden gebruikt op Linux. We zijn nog in afwachting van de release van de veelbelovende dstar repeater software van G4ULF. Die zal het mogelijk maken om  zelfbouwprojecten te gebruiken als een echte ICOM D-Star Repeater. DVAR is meer een full duplex repeater hotspot met functionaliteit, maar het heeft wel enkele leuke functies die zelfs de ICOM D-Star Digital Repeater niet heeft. Het leukst is het feit dat het systeem dat je vertelt via het bericht waar het momenteel is aangesloten, en doet dit na elke TX!  Dit zou cool zijn op de Icom repeaters! De TXU is gewijzigd op basis naar de handleiding  “hoe uw Tripple-P-TXU ombouwen voor D-Star” door PE1RPO. De belangrijkste mod is de PTT-mod. De  TXU is ontworpen voor TX 24 / 7, de PLL  is  traag en kan de CPU doen doorslaan.  Met de PTT-mod, kan de CPU (en de PLL) 24 / 7 in TX blijven en wordt enkel de eindtrap geschakeld via een externe poort van het Satoschi bord. Dit  betekent dat de repeater enkel in de lucht gaat wanneer dat nodig is , zonder de PLL de hele tijd te blokkeren. Met dank aan Tom ON4TOP voor de tip. Verder gebruikte ON4SAX de Trippe TXU-P-1256 handleiding voor de pin-out. Daarna de software configureren en de repeater werkte! Meer (Engels) hier. [...]
